GRP Cupola Restoration: 
The Harviglass Fibre team had the unique opportunity to create a GRP Cupola restoration for a historic school building in Stalybridge, Cheshire. Dating back to the early 19th century, this Grade II listed property was undergoing a significant transformation into a residential home, and our task was to restore its architectural centrepiece: a beautifully crafted timber and lead turret, known as a cupola, perched atop the roof.

Our team faced a considerable challenge: the cupola was in a state of severe deterioration, and finding craftsmen skilled in traditional restoration methods was nearly impossible. The skills required were becoming increasingly rare, making this project not only challenging but also a valuable opportunity to showcase our expertise in architectural restoration.

GRP Cupola Restoration with Traditional Charm

In response to this challenge, we at Harviglass Fibre, known for solving difficult architectural problems, devised a plan. Within just a few weeks, we created a mould and crafted a replica of the original cupola using GRP (Glass Reinforced Plastic). This innovative approach was not only efficient but also respectful of the building’s historical integrity. The entire process, from conception to installation, was filled with a sense of community spirit and civic pride, culminating in a memorable moment when the Mayor of Tameside ceremonially positioned our newly crafted GRP cupola.

Ensuring Durability and Aesthetics

To ensure that the roof construction proceeded smoothly and the building remained watertight, we first installed a ‘saddle’ base. This foundational step was crucial for stabilizing the lightweight cupola and safeguarding the building during the ongoing construction work.

Our newly installed cupola tower is not only a perfect aesthetic match to the original, with external colours and textures mimicking the original lead, but it is also completely weatherproof and maintenance-free. The installation of the complete cupola unit took less than one hour, a testament to the efficiency and precision of our work.
